What Does That Little Block Say On Some Of Your Paintings?

A question I get asked almost weekly. “what does that little block say on some of your paintings?”   As it goes, on my first trip to the China Coast back in 2010, I started out in Singapore. After a few nights stay at the amazing Marina Bay Sands Hotel, I wrapped up my visit in this very clean and beautiful city with a nail bitting swim in the hotel’s infinity pool. This pool extends to the very edge of the roof, sixty-two stories up, with city views that don’t disappoint. Soon after, I departed on a ship headed up the China Coast eventually destined for Shanghai.   Throughout my journey I was on the hunt for something special, a meaningful memento or souvenir to mark my trip. This task seemed to elude me, until I reached my destination in Shanghai. As I understood it to be the year of the dragon at the time, and then finding out that I was born in the year of the dragon, I now need to be on the lookout for some kind of dragon of course. My fortune eventually turned as I was walking through the old city. An elderly man caught my

ROLL REVERSAL 2020 – Art Innovation In A Global Pandemic

2020. Those four numbers strung together evoke thoughts of chaos, fear, uncertainty and a hoard of other thoughts and emotions that most of us would just rather forget. I remember seeing a meme of Will Ferrell beneath a picture of the world on fire as he was screaming “does anybody want to buy a painting” that about summed it up for me.   When the world was unexpectedly shut down, like many others, all my work shut down in an instant. My studio closed, my employees were gone. Any contracts I had went into Force Majeure and ended. I remember sitting alone at my shop with a thousand mile stare, trying to understand what to do next. The result was similar to the feeling of forgetting a word, or someones name, and trying to force your mind to produce the answer – and nothing happens.   As I was returning home I stopped at the grocery store for some things we needed. I was covered head to toe in multiple masks, gloves, goggles, Air Pods and a hoodie over my head. Like most people, I looked insane with no real firm grasp on what was going on in the world. I

2021 National Cherry Blossom Festival Official Artist – Patrick Guyton

The National Cherry Blossom Festival, held in Washington, D.C., is a springtime celebration of the beautiful cherry blossom trees that line the Mall and the Potomac River. Every year, one artist is chosen to represent the beautiful blossoms in their own interpretation. The cherry blossom-inspired art that these talented artists create is then displayed as the festival’s overall official artwork, centering their aesthetic and creativity around the official artists’ creations.   Patrick Guyton was honored as the official artist of the Cherry Blossom Festival in 2021, creating a magnificent piece that captures the essence of the blossoms alongside Washington’s iconic structures.   Guyton had included cherry blossoms in many of his pieces since 2008, becoming one of the iconic and recognizable subjects of his artworks over the years. It would only be fitting that 13 years later, Guyton would be offered an invitation to be the 2021 official Cherry Blossom Festival artist – an offer that he was more than happy to accept. Before taking on the daunting task of creating the official artwork for the festival, a piece that would be displayed across all the Cherry Blossom Festival platforms, as well as Washington D.C., Guyton dove deep into his research of past

Introducing Abstract into the catalog of Gilded Modernism®

I’m asked quite often, why I paint so many different styles of art and why I don’t focus on one particular style ie; Landscapes, Figurative, Still Life or Wild Life?” Actuality, I never really thought about it. I just paint what I’m in the mood for day by day. Over the years I’ve either had professional training, self training or crash courses in most, if not all, of the different disciplines and art styles. So, when I’m setting in to start a new piece, there are no real limits of what I expect of myself. To me that can be exciting. It can also be annoying. Similar to the days of going to the video store to pick a movie out of the multitude on the racks, which to choose? I now try to plan these decisions based on the collection that will be at a show or event, and what would give it a well rounded look.   Enter the aspect that I noticed was missing from my collections – the representation of Abstract works.   Now, before you close this page thinking that I’m going to start throwing the obligatory handfuls of paint, or maybe shooting dye filled
